Beagle Lab Mix (Beagador): Size, Temperament and Care

By Beagle Brook, beagle breeder in Cincinnati, OH · · 2 min read

The beagle Lab mix, often called a Beagador, is a cross between a beagle and a Labrador Retriever. Take two of America's friendliest breeds and you get a sociable, playful, people-loving dog that's usually medium-sized, athletic and very food-motivated. Here's what to expect from a Lab beagle mix.

Size

Because Labradors (55 to 80 pounds) are much bigger than beagles (20 to 30 pounds), Beagadors vary widely. Most land somewhere around 25 to 50 pounds, but some look like a big beagle and others like a small Lab. The parents' sizes are the best guide.

Temperament

Beagadors are typically outgoing, affectionate and great with people and other dogs. From the Lab they often get a love of water, fetch and pleasing their family; from the beagle, a powerful nose, curiosity and a tendency to wander after scents. Most are less vocal than beagles, but some bay and howl.

Training

Lab beagle mixes are usually easier to train than purebred beagles, because the Labrador's eagerness balances the beagle's independence. Both breeds are food-crazy, so treat-based training works brilliantly. Work on recall early, and keep a long line on them in unfenced areas. See our beagle training guide for techniques that work with hounds.

Exercise

These are energetic dogs. Plan for at least an hour, ideally more, of walks, running, fetch, swimming and sniffing games every day. A bored Beagador chews and digs.

Grooming and shedding

Both parents have short, dense double coats, so expect moderate to heavy shedding, especially in spring and fall. Brush weekly (daily in shedding season), clean ears weekly — floppy ears are prone to infection — and trim nails every few weeks.

Health

Beagadors can inherit conditions from either parent, including hip and elbow dysplasia, ear infections, eye conditions, hypothyroidism and — most commonly — obesity. Both breeds overeat, so measure meals carefully. See best dog food for beagles.

Is a beagle Lab mix right for you?

A Beagador is a great fit for active families with time for exercise, a secure yard and a sense of humor about food theft. They're less suited to people who want a calm, low-energy dog or are away all day.

Questions

How big does a beagle Lab mix get?

Usually about 25 to 50 pounds and 15 to 24 inches tall, depending on the parents.

Are Beagadors good family dogs?

Yes, typically. They're friendly, playful and good with children and other dogs, with enough exercise and training.

Do beagle Lab mixes bark a lot?

Usually less than purebred beagles, but some inherit the beagle's baying and howling.

Where can I find Beagador puppies for sale near me?

Beagadors are a cross, so they come from mixed litters or rescues. Check shelters and breed-specific rescues — many beagle and Lab mixes are waiting for homes. At Beagle Brook we raise purebred beagles only; see our beagle puppies for sale.
