Beagle Basset Hound Mix (Bagle Hound): Size, Temperament and Care
The beagle Basset Hound mix, or Bagle Hound, combines two classic scent hounds. Expect long, velvety ears, soulful eyes, a nose that never stops working and a voice that carries. Bagle Hounds are usually calmer than beagles and sturdier than they look.

Appearance and size
Most Bagle Hounds are low to the ground and heavy for their height, with the Basset's longer back and loose skin and the beagle's shorter muzzle. Coats are short and usually tricolor, lemon and white, or red and white.
Temperament
Bagle Hounds are typically gentle, patient and affectionate, and get along with children and other dogs. They're laid-back indoors but determined outdoors, especially on a scent. Both parents bay, so expect a loud, musical voice.
Training
Both parents are independent scent hounds, so training takes patience. Keep sessions short, use food rewards and work on recall in safe, fenced spaces. Leash walking matters: a nose-down Bagle Hound pulls hard. See our beagle training guide.
Exercise
A daily hour of walks with plenty of time to sniff keeps a Bagle Hound fit and content. They're not built for long runs or jumping.
Care and health
- Ears: long, heavy ears need weekly cleaning to prevent infections.
- Weight: Bagle Hounds gain weight easily, which strains their back and joints. See fat beagle.
- Back: use ramps and support them when lifting, as their longer spine is at risk of IVDD.
- Eyes and skin: droopy eyes and skin folds should be kept clean.
- Bloat: deeper-chested dogs can be at risk; feed two meals a day and avoid hard exercise right after eating.
