Beagle Mix Breeds: 12 Popular Beagle Mixes and What They’re Like

By Beagle Brook, beagle breeder in Cincinnati, OH · · 3 min read

Beagle mixes combine the beagle's friendly, curious personality with the traits of another breed. Some are deliberate crosses with catchy names — the Puggle, the Beagador, the Doxle — and many more are wonderful shelter dogs listed simply as "beagle mix" or "beagle/terrier". This guide explains the most popular beagle mixes, how big they get, and what they're like to live with.

One thing to know first: a mixed breed can inherit any combination of traits from either parent, so size, coat and temperament vary a lot, even within one litter.

Weights are rough guides; individual dogs can fall outside them.

Beagle Lab mix (Beagador)

A friendly, sociable, food-loving family dog, usually larger and more athletic than a beagle. Beagadors need plenty of exercise and are often easier to train than purebred beagles thanks to the Lab's eagerness to please. Read the full beagle Lab mix guide.

Beagle Dachshund mix (Doxle)

Two scent hounds in one: curious, brave, vocal and determined. Doxles often have the dachshund's longer back, which needs protecting. See the Dachshund beagle mix guide.

Beagle Chihuahua mix (Cheagle)

A small, lively, loyal dog that often bonds strongly with one person. Cheagles can be vocal and need gentle socialization. Read the beagle Chihuahua mix guide.

Beagle Basset Hound mix (Bagle Hound)

A mellow, droopy-eared, nose-first companion with a big voice, generally calmer than a beagle. See the beagle Basset Hound mix guide.

Beagle Poodle mix (Poogle)

Poogles are bright and trainable, with coats ranging from short and smooth to curly. They're sometimes advertised as low-shedding, but that isn't guaranteed — many inherit the beagle coat and shed normally.

Beagle Boxer mix (Bogle)

Bogles are playful, muscular and energetic, often with a boxer's clownish personality and a beagle's nose. They need lots of exercise and early training, and are usually good with families.

Beagle Pug mix (Puggle)

The Puggle became one of the best-known "designer" dogs in the 2000s. Puggles are affectionate and social, but some inherit the pug's short muzzle and the breathing, heat and eye problems that come with it.

Beagle Corgi mix (Beagi)

Beagis are usually long-bodied, short-legged and full of energy, with a herding dog's alertness and a beagle's nose. Like Doxles, they need their backs protected.

Beagle Jack Russell mix (Jack-A-Bee) and beagle terrier mixes

Terrier mixes are bold, quick and very energetic. "Beagle/terrier" is one of the most common labels on shelter listings, and these dogs often make lively, clever companions for active homes.

Beagle Golden Retriever mix

A gentle, people-loving dog that's usually larger than a beagle, with a coat anywhere from short to feathered. They tend to be easy-going family dogs that need daily exercise.

Should you get a beagle mix or a purebred beagle?

Beagle mixes can be wonderful dogs, and many are waiting in shelters. The main difference is predictability: with a purebred beagle from health-checked parents you know the adult size, coat and temperament, and you get a breeder's health guarantee. With a mix — especially a first-generation cross — you get a mix of both parents, in proportions nobody can predict.

At Beagle Brook we raise purebred beagles only. If you love the beagle personality, see our beagle breed guide or our beagle puppies for sale. If a mix is right for you, see beagle adoption vs. buying from a breeder.

Questions

The Puggle (beagle × pug) and the Beagador (beagle × Labrador) are two of the best known, and "beagle/terrier" mixes are very common in shelters.

Are beagle mixes healthier than purebred beagles?

Not automatically. A mix can inherit health problems from either parent breed. Health-checked parents matter more than whether a dog is mixed or purebred.

Do beagle mixes bark a lot?

Many do. Beagles are vocal hounds, and most beagle mixes inherit at least some of that voice.

Are beagle mixes good with kids?

Most are friendly and playful, thanks to the beagle's gentle nature, but temperament varies with the other breed and the individual dog.
