How Long Do Beagles Live? Beagle Lifespan and Life Expectancy

By Beagle Brook, beagle breeder in Cincinnati, OH · · 3 min read

Most beagles live 12 to 15 years, and many reach their late teens. The American Kennel Club gives the breed a life expectancy of 10 to 15 years, which is long for a dog of their size and a sign of how sturdy the breed is. How long your own beagle lives depends on genetics, weight, exercise and day-to-day care — and several of those are in your hands.

What affects how long a beagle lives?

Genetics and breeding

Parents with good health and long-lived lines give a puppy the best start. Beagles have several inherited conditions, some with DNA tests — Musladin-Lueke syndrome (MLS), Factor VII deficiency, neonatal cerebellar cortical degeneration (NCCD) and Imerslund-Gräsbeck syndrome (IGS) among them. Ask any breeder what testing the parents have had. Ours are listed on our beagles page.

Weight

This is the big one. Beagles love food and are prone to obesity, and extra weight strains joints and the spine, raises the risk of diabetes and shortens life. Studies in dogs have repeatedly found that lean dogs live longer than overweight ones. Our fat beagle guide shows how to tell whether your beagle is at a healthy weight.

Exercise and mental stimulation

Daily walks, play and sniffing keep a beagle's muscles, heart and brain in good shape and prevent the boredom that leads to over-eating and destructive habits.

Safety

Beagles follow their nose — straight into roads. A good fence, a leash in unfenced places and a microchip with up-to-date details prevent many accidents. So does keeping chocolate, grapes, raisins, xylitol (in sugar-free gum) and medicines out of reach of a dog who will eat anything.

Vet care

Yearly checkups (twice a year for seniors), vaccinations, parasite prevention and dental care catch problems early, when they're easiest to treat.

Common health problems by life stage

Puppies and young adults: ear infections, intestinal parasites, eating things they shouldn't, cherry eye.

Adults: weight gain, allergies and skin problems, hypothyroidism, epilepsy (usually appears between 1 and 5 years old), hip dysplasia.

Seniors: intervertebral disc disease (IVDD), arthritis, dental disease, glaucoma and cataracts, heart disease and cancer.

Signs of aging in beagles

From about 8 to 10 years old you may notice a graying muzzle, more sleep, stiffness after rest, weight changes, cloudy eyes or less interest in long walks. Tell your vet about any sudden change in appetite, thirst, weight, mobility or behavior.

How to help your beagle live longer

  1. Keep them lean. Weigh food, count treats and keep a visible waist.
  2. Walk every day, with plenty of time to sniff.
  3. Protect their back. Use ramps or steps for furniture and cars, and use a harness rather than a collar for pulling.
  4. Clean their ears every week.
  5. Brush their teeth several times a week.
  6. See the vet at least once a year, twice once they're seniors.
  7. Keep their mind busy with food puzzles, sniff games and training.
  8. Never let them roam off-leash outside a fenced area.

Questions

How long do beagles live on average?

Most beagles live about 12 to 15 years. The AKC lists their life expectancy as 10 to 15 years.

Do 13-inch beagles live longer than 15-inch beagles?

There's no strong evidence of a meaningful difference between the two size varieties. Weight, genetics and care matter far more than height.

At what age is a beagle a senior?

Most beagles are considered seniors from around 8 to 10 years old.

Do male or female beagles live longer?

Any difference between the sexes is small. Spaying or neutering decisions, weight and overall care have a bigger effect — talk to your vet about timing.

What is the most common cause of death in beagles?

As in most dog breeds, cancer and age-related organ disease are leading causes in older beagles, while accidents — often from wandering off after a scent — are a common cause in younger dogs.
