Dachshund Beagle Mix (Doxle): Size, Personality and Care

By Beagle Brook, beagle breeder in Cincinnati, OH · · 2 min read

The Dachshund beagle mix — also called a Doxle, a beagle dachshund mix or a "wiener dog beagle mix" — crosses two scent hounds. The result is a small, brave, curious and often very vocal dog with a big personality and a nose that never switches off.

Appearance and size

Most Doxles have a beagle-like head and ears on a longer body with shorter legs, but the mix varies. Size depends heavily on whether the dachshund parent was standard or miniature. Coat colors include tricolor, red, black and tan, and dachshund dapple patterns.

Temperament

Both parent breeds were bred to hunt — beagles for rabbits, dachshunds for badgers — so Doxles are bold, independent and driven by scent. They're affectionate and loyal with their family, often playful well into adulthood, and can be wary of strangers. Expect barking and baying, and a strong urge to dig.

Protect their back

Many Doxles inherit the dachshund's long back, and both parent breeds are prone to intervertebral disc disease (IVDD). To lower the risk:

  • keep your Doxle lean — extra weight strains the spine
  • use ramps or steps instead of letting them jump on and off furniture
  • use a harness rather than a collar for walks
  • support their chest and hindquarters when you pick them up

Training

Doxles are smart but stubborn. Short, upbeat, treat-based sessions work best. Start recall, crate and potty training early, and be patient — house training small hounds can take a little longer. Our beagle training guide covers hound-friendly methods.

Exercise and grooming

About an hour of walks and play a day, including sniffing time, keeps a Doxle happy. Grooming is easy for smooth coats: weekly brushing, monthly baths, weekly ear checks and regular nail trims.

Health

Besides IVDD, watch for obesity, ear infections, eye conditions, dental disease and skin allergies. Regular vet checks and portion control go a long way.

Questions

How big does a dachshund beagle mix get?

Usually 15 to 30 pounds and 9 to 15 inches tall, depending on the parents.

Are Doxles good family dogs?

Yes, for families who can handle a vocal, strong-willed little hound and supervise interactions with small children (to protect the dog's back as much as anything).

Do dachshund beagle mixes shed?

Moderately, if they have the common short coat.

Do you breed Doxles?

No. Beagle Brook raises purebred beagles only. See our beagle puppies for sale, or compare other mixes in beagle mix breeds.
