Beagle Chihuahua Mix (Cheagle): Size, Temperament and Care

By Beagle Brook, beagle breeder in Cincinnati, OH · · 2 min read

The beagle Chihuahua mix, known as the Cheagle, crosses a beagle with a Chihuahua. It's a small, lively, loyal dog that combines the beagle's curious nose with the Chihuahua's big attitude. Cheagles are sometimes sold as "mini" or "pocket" beagles, so it's worth knowing exactly what you're getting.

Size and appearance

Cheagles are small dogs, but size varies. Some look like a petite beagle; others have the Chihuahua's rounder head, larger eyes and upright or semi-floppy ears. Colors range from beagle tricolor to fawn, cream, black and tan.

Temperament

Cheagles tend to be affectionate and devoted, often attaching themselves to one favorite person. They're alert watchdogs — which means barking — and can be wary of strangers and boisterous children without good socialization. Many inherit the beagle's love of sniffing and food, and the Chihuahua's love of a warm lap.

Training and socialization

Early, gentle socialization with people, children and other dogs is important for a confident Cheagle. Use positive, treat-based training in short sessions. Small dogs can be slow to house-train, so stick to a consistent routine. See our beagle training guide.

Health

Cheagles can inherit conditions from either parent, including dental crowding (very common in small dogs), luxating kneecaps, eye problems, ear infections and obesity. Small puppies can be prone to low blood sugar, so regular meals matter.

Is a Chihuahua beagle mix the same as a pocket beagle?

Not exactly, but many dogs advertised as "pocket" or "mini" beagles are actually beagle Chihuahua mixes or other small crosses. If you want a small purebred beagle, consider a 13-inch beagle. Read the truth about pocket beagles.
