Best Dog Food for Beagles: A Feeding Guide by Age

By Beagle Brook, beagle breeder in Cincinnati, OH · · 3 min read

The best dog food for a beagle is a complete and balanced food that suits their life stage, fed in carefully measured portions. Beagles aren't fussy eaters — they'll eat almost anything — so the real challenge isn't finding a food they like. It's keeping them at a healthy weight. Here's how to choose a food and how much to feed.

What to look for in a beagle food

  • "Complete and balanced" for the right life stage (puppy, adult or all life stages) according to AAFCO standards. This statement is on the bag and matters more than any marketing.
  • Made by a company that employs veterinary nutritionists and does feeding trials or quality testing.
  • A named animal protein high on the ingredient list.
  • Calories that suit your dog. Many beagles do well on a moderate-calorie adult food, or a "healthy weight" formula if they gain easily.
  • Kibble size that suits their mouth and slows down speed-eaters.

Your vet knows your beagle best. Ask them which foods they recommend for your dog's age, weight and health.

Breed-specific foods (Royal Canin Beagle and others)

Some brands make foods for individual breeds. Royal Canin Beagle Adult, for example, is a dry food made specifically for adult beagles and sold in several bag sizes (including a 12 kg bag in some countries). Breed-specific foods are formulated around a breed's typical size and tendencies — for beagles, that usually means calorie control and a kibble designed to slow fast eaters.

A breed-specific food can be a good choice, but it isn't required. Any complete, balanced food in the right portions can keep a beagle healthy. What matters most is the life-stage statement, the quality of the manufacturer, and how much you feed.

How much to feed a beagle

Start with the feeding guide on the bag for your beagle's ideal weight (not their current weight, if they're overweight), then adjust every few weeks based on their body shape.

AgeMeals per dayNotes
8 to 12 weeks4Puppy food, small regular meals
3 to 6 months3Puppy food
6 to 12 months2 to 3Switch to adult food around 12 months
Adult (1 to 8 years)2Adult food, measured
Senior (8+ years)2Senior or lower-calorie food if needed

Weigh food with a kitchen scale; cups are surprisingly inaccurate.

Treats

Treats should be no more than 10% of daily calories. Use small treats, part of their regular kibble, or healthy options like carrot sticks, green beans or apple slices (no seeds). Beagles don't care much about treat size — a tiny piece is as exciting as a big one.

Slow down the speed eater

Most beagles inhale their food. A slow-feeder bowl, a snuffle mat or a food puzzle makes mealtime last longer, prevents gulping and gives them a job for their nose.

Foods beagles must never eat

Beagles are expert scavengers, so keep these locked away:

  • chocolate, coffee and caffeine
  • grapes, raisins and currants
  • xylitol (in sugar-free gum, candy and some peanut butters)
  • onions, garlic, leeks and chives
  • macadamia nuts
  • alcohol and raw bread dough
  • cooked bones, corn cobs and fatty scraps

If your beagle eats something dangerous, call your vet or an animal poison hotline straight away.

Feeding your Beagle Brook puppy

Your puppy comes home with a starter supply of the food they already eat. Keep them on it for at least the first couple of weeks. If you want to switch, mix the new food in gradually over 7 to 10 days.

Questions

What is the best dog food for beagles?

A complete and balanced food for your beagle's life stage, from a reputable maker, fed in measured portions. Breed-specific formulas such as Royal Canin Beagle are one option; your vet can help you choose.

How much should a beagle eat per day?

It depends on the food's calories and your beagle's size and activity. Use the bag's guide for their ideal weight and adjust to keep a visible waist.

Should beagles eat grain-free food?

Not unless your vet recommends it. Grain-free diets have been investigated for a possible link to heart disease in dogs, and most beagles do well on foods that include grains.

Why is my beagle always hungry?

Beagles are bred to be food-driven, and many act hungry even when they've had plenty. Stick to measured meals and use food puzzles to keep them busy.
