Beagle Puppy Care: Your First 30 Days With a Baby Beagle

The first month with a beagle puppy sets the tone for the rest of their life. It's also a lot of work, and a lot of fun. This guide walks you through what to buy, how to set up your home, and what to focus on week by week, so your baby beagle settles in happily.

Before your puppy arrives

Shopping list

  • Crate big enough for an adult beagle (about 30 inches), with a divider to make it puppy-sized for now
  • Bed and washable blankets
  • Food and water bowls (stainless steel is easiest to clean)
  • Puppy food — the same food your puppy already eats (Beagle Brook puppies come with a starter supply)
  • Harness, collar with ID tag and a 6-foot leash
  • Chew toys of different textures, and a food puzzle toy
  • Enzyme cleaner for accidents
  • Baby gates to block stairs and rooms
  • Puppy shampoo, rubber brush, nail clippers, ear cleaner

Beagle-proof your home

Beagle puppies explore with their nose and mouth. Before they arrive:

  • put trash cans behind closed doors or use lockable lids
  • move shoes, socks, kids' toys and cables out of reach
  • keep food off counters and tables — beagles learn to climb
  • store medicines, cleaning products and anything with xylitol (sugar-free gum and some peanut butter) out of reach
  • check the yard fence for gaps and dig spots

Book a vet appointment

Book a vet visit within your health guarantee window — at Beagle Brook, within 72 hours of delivery. Bring the health record that came with your puppy.

Week 1: settling in

  • Keep it calm. Limit visitors for the first few days. Let your puppy explore one or two rooms.
  • Start the routine: meals, potty breaks, naps and play at the same times every day.
  • Potty training starts now. Take your puppy outside after waking, after eating, after playing and every 1 to 2 hours. Praise and reward the moment they go.
  • Crate training: feed meals in the crate and toss treats in, so the crate becomes their safe den. Put it near your bed for the first nights.
  • Vet check within 72 hours.

Week 2: building good habits

  • Start short training sessions (2 to 5 minutes): their name, "sit", and coming to you for a treat.
  • Handle paws, ears and mouth gently every day, so grooming and vet visits are easy later.
  • Teach "alone time" in small doses: a few minutes in the crate or a gated area with a chew while you're in another room.

Weeks 3 and 4: socialization

Puppies learn what's normal most easily before about 14 to 16 weeks old. Give your puppy calm, positive experiences with:

  • people of different ages, looks and voices
  • car rides, the vacuum, doorbells and traffic sounds
  • different surfaces: grass, gravel, tile, stairs
  • calm, vaccinated adult dogs you know

Until your vet says their vaccinations are complete, avoid dog parks and places where unknown dogs go. Ask your vet about puppy classes; many accept puppies after their first vaccines.

Feeding a beagle puppy

Use the feeding guide on your puppy food bag as a starting point, weigh portions, and adjust to keep your puppy lean. Count treats as part of their daily food. Beagles will always act hungry — don't let those eyes win! Read more in best dog food for beagles.

Sleep

Beagle puppies sleep 18 to 20 hours a day. Overtired puppies get bitey and wild, so build naps into your day. Expect one or two night-time potty trips for the first few weeks.

Common first-month problems

  • Crying at night: keep the crate near you, take a quiet potty break if needed, and keep it boring.
  • Nipping: redirect to a chew toy, and stop play for a moment when teeth touch skin.
  • Accidents: clean with enzyme cleaner and go out more often. Never punish.
  • Upset tummy: often from stress or a food change. Keep to the food they came with and call your vet if it lasts more than a day or your puppy seems unwell.

Questions

When can a beagle puppy go outside?

Your own yard is fine from day one. Public places where unknown dogs go should wait until your vet says your puppy is protected.

How long can a beagle puppy hold their bladder?

A rough guide is their age in months plus one, in hours — so a 2-month-old puppy needs a potty break about every 3 hours, and more often when awake and active.

When do beagle puppies calm down?

Most beagles mature between 18 months and 2 years. Exercise, sniffing games and training help at every age.

How big will my beagle puppy get?

Look at the parents. Thirteen-inch beagles usually weigh under 20 pounds as adults; 15-inch beagles about 20 to 30 pounds.
