Are Beagles Good With Cats and Other Pets?
Beagles are pack hounds, so most beagles get along very well with other dogs and many live happily with cats — especially when they grow up together. Small pets like rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters are a different story: beagles were bred to hunt rabbits, and that instinct is strong.

Beagles and dogs
Beagles were bred to work in packs, so they usually love canine company. Many owners find a second dog helps a beagle cope with time alone. Introduce dogs on neutral ground, on leashes, with plenty of space, and feed them apart while they settle in.
Beagles and cats
Many beagles and cats become real friends. It's easiest when a beagle puppy grows up with a cat. Adult beagles can learn to live with cats too, but a running cat can trigger the chase instinct.
How to introduce a beagle puppy to a cat
- Give the cat a safe zone your puppy can't reach — high shelves, a gated room and a separate feeding spot.
- Swap scents first: let each sniff the other's bedding for a few days.
- Meet on a leash, with the puppy calm and the cat free to leave.
- Reward calm behavior — looking at the cat and turning away earns a treat.
- Keep sessions short and supervise all contact for the first weeks.
- Protect the litter box and cat food — beagles find both irresistible.
Beagles and small pets
Rabbits, guinea pigs and other small animals trigger a beagle's strongest instincts. Even friendly beagles can harm small pets in an instant. Keep small animals in secure enclosures in a room your beagle can't enter, and never leave them together unsupervised.
Beagles and children
Beagles are famously good with children — patient, playful and gentle. Teach kids to be calm with a new puppy and never leave babies or toddlers alone with any dog. Read are beagles good family dogs?
Questions
Do beagles chase cats?
Some do, especially outdoors or when a cat runs. Beagles raised with cats usually learn to live with them peacefully.
Can a beagle live with a rabbit?
It's risky. Beagles were bred to hunt rabbits, so keep rabbits separate and secure.
Are beagles good with other dogs?
Usually very good. As pack hounds, most beagles enjoy canine company.
Should I get two beagles?
Many beagles enjoy a canine companion, which can ease loneliness. Two puppies at once is a lot of work, though — many owners add the second dog once the first is trained.
