13-Inch vs. 15-Inch Beagle: Size, Weight and Which to Choose

By Beagle Brook, beagle breeder in Cincinnati, OH · · 2 min read

Beagles come in two recognized size varieties, measured at the shoulder: 13 inches and under, and over 13 up to 15 inches. They're the same breed with the same personality — the only real difference is size. Here's how they compare and how to choose.

How are beagles measured?

Height is measured from the ground to the top of the shoulder blades (the withers), with the dog standing square — not to the top of the head. A beagle that's 13 inches at the shoulder looks noticeably bigger than "13 inches" sounds.

Is there a difference in temperament?

No. Both varieties are bred to the same standard and share the same cheerful, sociable, nose-first personality. Individual personality, upbringing and training matter far more than size.

Which size is right for you?

Choose a 13-inch beagle if you live in an apartment or a smaller home, want a dog that's easy to pick up and travel with, or have limited space in the car.

Choose a 15-inch beagle if you want a sturdier companion for hiking and active children, or you'd like a dog that's a little less fragile during rough-and-tumble play.

Either size needs the same things: daily exercise, a secure fence or a leash, careful portions and plenty of company.

How to predict a beagle puppy's adult size

A puppy's adult size is hard to guarantee, but these help:

  • Look at the parents. This is the best guide. Two 13-inch parents are likely to produce 13-inch puppies; mixed-size parents can produce either.
  • Ask about past litters from the same pairing.
  • Watch growth. Most beagles reach close to their adult height by about 12 months. See our beagle growth chart.

Every Beagle Brook puppy page shows the expected adult size and both parents.

What about "pocket" and "mini" beagles?

Dogs sold as pocket or miniature beagles are bred smaller than the two recognized varieties, often with extra health risks. If you want a small beagle, a 13-inch beagle is the healthy choice. Read the truth about pocket beagles.

Questions

Is a 13-inch beagle a miniature beagle?

No. The 13-inch beagle is one of the two recognized varieties of the breed. "Miniature" or "pocket" beagles are bred smaller than the standard.

Do 15-inch beagles cost more?

Not usually. Size variety rarely changes the price. See how much a beagle costs.

Can a 13-inch beagle grow taller than 13 inches?

Yes, it can happen. Size is predicted, not guaranteed, which is why the parents' sizes are the best guide.

Which beagle size is better with kids?

Both are excellent with children. A 15-inch beagle is a little sturdier for energetic play; a 13-inch beagle is easier for older kids to handle on a leash.
